Almost 4.2 million Texans enrolled in Affordable Care Act health insurance for 2026, a more than 5% increase from last year, per federal data.

The big picture: Around 23 million Americans enrolled for a health insurance plan through the ACA for this year, a roughly 5.8% decrease from last year.

State of play: Policy experts were concerned enrollments would drop with the expiration of enhanced federal subsidies, but Texas’ final enrollment numbers exceeded their expectations.

What’s next: qualifying life event, such as losing coverage, marrying or having a baby, is the only time someone can enroll in or change their marketplace health insurance plan outside the open enrollment period.
